i just got a one-year old Bishon-poodle mix, I need some tips on keeping his coat white and smelling fresh?

I need some helpful tips on keeping my bison-poodle mix dog’s hair coat pretty, white, and smelling fresh between grooming visits. Right now I just try to wipe his paws when after we come in from a walk.

Brushing everyday is a must with that breed. If you must go for longer than a day, never go more than 2. The breed is a mix of 2 that have a very high risk to curling and when this happens, it tangles. Brushing will also help to keep the coat clean because it will knock the dirt off rather than letting it soak into the hair. The best time to brush your dog is after playtime, this is when the dog is: #1 most likely to get dirty, and #2 most relaxed because they just expelled their energy playing.

Wiping his paws after a walk is a great idea. I have had 3 dogs that I have trained to wipe their own feet on the mat before they come into the house, that was really helpful for keeping my white carpet white and 3 less things to do every day!

To keep the coat feeling and smelling fresh, I would suggest Tomlyn Nova Pearls Fresh Scent Deodorant. It is available at a few stores that I have seen (such as Petco) for about $10 a bottle. Just mist it over your dog’s hair, then brush your dog. It should make the coat all a slight bit damp, but it dries in no time at all because it is so light. It is also great to use as a spray on de-tangler in case he gets a tangle that you need some help brushing. It has a light baby powder scent that ends up very light after it dries. If you don’t like the smell of that, I would say to still use it and after the coat is dry, spray on a cologne (bought from any pet store). I would suggest a natural kind because of the lower risk that your pet may have an allergy to it.

If you are still losing the whiteness (which with the brushing and spraying I suggest you shouldn’t unless you go more than 8 weeks between grooms), then you can give your boy a bath using a lightening shampoo such as Earthbath Light Color Coat Brightener Shampoo. It is also an all natural product, thus less chance of allergies. This also costs about $10. Read the directions, let sit on your pet for about 3-5 minutes and then rinse.

If you do bath your pet in between groom’s at a salon, do not expect the full/fluffy/straight coat that the groomer sends your pet home with unless you have a high velocity dryer at home. The blow drying is really what makes the coat fluffy. The best advice if you don’t have one is to use a hair dryer (set to cold or possibly warm as long as you can run it over your elbow joint {inside not outside} and not get hot, it should be ok for him) and dry him somewhat, brush him fully, and repeat the brushing in between the blow drying.
