How bad are disposable ice packs/cold packs for the Earth?

Please tell me anything you know… and by ice packs/cold packs, I mean those disposable bags that hold ammonium nitrate and water. I always thought they were called just ice packs, hmmm….

such packs can be of two types. Either they contain phase change materials and must be cooled and tend to keep their temperature for a long time or they use a chemical reaction to achieve the colder temperatures. Phase change materials tend to be either waxes or salts. The chemicals are a different matter.

Look at what you have with an disposible Ice Pack, typically it is not the product but the packaging that is problematic. Amonium Nitrate is a fertilizer, water is well water. When amonium nitrate is used as a fertilizer and it rains you get the same reaction. This is not a problem. What becomes a problem is too much fertilizer that runs off into streams, rivers and the ocean. But there are also two plastic bags you would not have if you had used ice alone. And plastic bags are not so biodegradable.
