The Pros and Cons of Muscle Cars   by Paul

“Muscle car” as a term is starting to sound old-fashioned. A muscle car is a car, typically American made, that has a powerful engine designed for high speeds. Arguably, the first one was the Oldsmobile Rocket 88. The Rocket 88 had a big cultural impact; it was the title of the first Rock n’ Roll song, “Rocket 88″ by Ike Turner, which had a huge impact on the biggest popular musicians of the 20th century. The Rocket 88 was a smaller car with a powerful engine; it provided the prototype for future muscle cars and inspired many look-a-likes from other car manufacturers.

The popularity of muscle cars and pony cars grew over the decades, hitting its peak in the 1960s. There was an incredible amount of models available from different manufacturers, varying from expensive models to budget cars. They did well in NASCAR and practically every teenager was driving one. They were generally known for their affordability and power, but there were plenty of downsides to the classic pony car.

Old muscle cars are still available today from private sellers and in used car lots, but they are not practical in the slightest. Many of them do not meet environmental regulations or emissions standards due to the engine size and lack of regulations when it was manufactured. Old models are powerful, but they get atrocious gas mileage and are expensive to run and maintain, especially with today’s gas prices. Classic muscle cars are also now collectors items for car collectors, so they are harder to find and more expensive.

Muscle and pony car manufacturing was phased out in the early 70s by many companies, and only a few models were kept in production with changes that made them more affordable and environmentally friendly. The gasoline rationing that occurred in the 70s did not help keep muscle autos around. They became more expensive to run, and the models still being made were much more expensive than they used to be. Over the next few decades high performance autos were not especially popular in the United States, but in the last ten years there has been a resurgence of new high performance models designed with older models designs in mind. Many companies are reintroducing classic car models with new designs, so if you want a classic muscle car but not an ancient gas guzzler, you are in luck.

Even new models do not get the best gas mileage and can be expensive to run and use on a daily basis, so if you are thinking about buying a muscle or pony car, look up the True Cost to Own for the cars you are interested in. The True Cost to Own will configure the average cost of gas, insurance, maintenance, etc., so you can know how much money you will have to spend on a high performance model on a month to month basis. If you are worried about being environmentally friendly and reducing your carbon footprint, then you will probably want to look at electric cars or hybrids that get better gas mileage. If you would like a high performance second car to play with on the weekends, then a muscle car could be perfect for you.
