If I use mineral turps instead of gum turps with beeswax for furniture polish what will be the outcome?

I am about to polish a jarrah burl and equal parts beeswax and gum turps was recommended. I have mixed the beeswax with mineral turps and I’m wondering if I need to destroy this and go back to the original suggestion? What difference will using the beeswax and mineral turps make to the product finish?

For a real shine, wipe/rub the wood down with White Vinegar, and let dry, before polishing. Mineral Turpentine will evaporate a little more quickly than one that contains Gum. You can use either. In fact, I prefer the mineral mix. All it means is that you have to work a bit faster. The difference in drying times, between gum and natural Turpentine, are minimal anyway.

Beeswax polish is made by putting equal amounts of beeswax and turpentine in a container, with a lid to stop evaporation, and leaving it in a warm area where the wax will dissolve into the turpentine. It may take a few days to do this and can be speeded up by melting the wax in a metal container (perhaps a smaller saucepan) as described above and then moving it well away from the heat source and pouring in the turpentine and stirring. Pour it into the final container or tins and leave it to cool and set.

A good container is a wide jam jar but any container will do so long as you can enclose it with a lid or the turpentine will evaporate. It’s better to use a little more turpentine than wax because you can always leave it open for a few hours to reduce the turpentine. Only use real turpentine and not turpentine substitute.

Apply the wax to the wood with a cloth or soft brush. Leave for about 20 minutes for the turpentine to evaporate off and for the mixture to penetrate the wood and then polish with a soft cloth. When starting with unpolished wood apply a few coats of “Sanding Sealer” from your DIY shop as per the instructions and then a reasonable amount of polish the first time and then give it a good, hard polish every day for about a week. After that applying polish every few months will be enough. When the wood is already polished apply the wax polish sparingly i.e. only use a small amount of wax polish.
